The Design: Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the most talented, electrifying players to have ever donned a Major League uniform. The son of former 3x MLB All-Star, Ken Griffey Sr., ‘Junior’ arrived in the big leagues in 1989 with the Seattle Mariners at the age of 19. While ‘Junior’ would go on to play 20+ years in the big leagues and conclude with a Hall of Fame career (13x All Star, 10x Gold Glove winner, 7x Silver Slugger and MVP Award), there was one very special moment which occurred on September 14, 1990. Griffey Sr. had started that year with the Cincinnati Reds but was eventually released that summer. Senior signed on with the Mariners soon thereafter, making the Griffey’s the first father/son teammates in MLB history. With the Mariners visiting the Angels on September 14th of that year, the Griffey’s appeared on the lineup card to face Kirk McCaskill. In the first inning and with Senior batting 2nd and Junior 3rd, the improbable happened. After Harold Reynolds led off the game with a walk, Griffey Sr. homered to left-center field to give the M’s a 2-0 lead. ‘Junior’ then came to the plate and repeated his dad’s effort…back to back home runs by father and son, the first time and only time it has ever happened in a Major League game. Ken Griffey Sr. finished his 18-year career with a .296 average, 152 HR’s and 859 RBIs and played on some incredible ‘Big Red Machine’ teams in the 70’s but the feat accomplished on that September night in Southern California will most likely live as one of his most cherished moments. The Griffey’s are our inspiration for the ‘Like Father, Like Son’ graphic. Designed by Peter Chen (@jumbotronart on Instagram).
