The Design: Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, was not only known for his incredible baseball skills but also for his infectious smile and upbeat attitude. Banks started his professional baseball career in the Negro Leagues in 1950 with the Kansas City Monarchs. After serving two years in the military, Banks returned to the Monarchs and would later begin his MLB career in 1953 with the Chicago Cubs. Banks' Hall of Fame career with the Cubs included being named to the All Star team 14 times, winning back to back NL MVP awards in 1958 & 1959 and a Gold Glove award in 1960. Banks’ career concluded with a career .274 batting average, 2,583 hits, 512 home runs and 1,636 RBIs. His 512th and final home run came at Wrigley Field on August 24, 1971 versus the Cincinnati Reds. Inducted in the baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, Banks spent his entire career wearing a Cubs uniform and had his #14 retired by the franchise in 1982. One of his more famous quotes continues to be used to this day, “It’s a beautiful day for a ballgame…Let’s play two!” To learn more about Ernie Banks, you can visit his Hall of Fame page here.
