The Design: The Los Angeles Angels came into existence in 1961 courtesy of a man who had a passion for baseball and a vision for growing the game in Southern California. An actor, singer and entrepreneur, Gene Autry was persuaded by Major League Baseball officials to become owner of the new expansion team in Los Angeles. Named the L.A. Angels when they debuted in 1961, the 'Halos' changed their name to the California Angels when they moved to their current home in Anaheim, California. The long time owner wanted nothing more than to see his club win a World Series Championship and while they had remarkable runs in 1979, 1982 & 1986, the team was never able to bring it home for the Cowboy. Autry sold controlling interest of the Angels to the Walt Disney Company in 1996. In 2002, four years after 'Mr. Autry' passed away, the Angels finally won their first championship. The 'Singing Cowboy' was beloved by Angels players, staff and fans...so much so, the number 26 (as in the 26th man on the roster) was retired in his honor. Orvon Grover 'Gene' Autry is our inspiration for the Singing Cowboy graphic.
