The Design: The night of October 15, 1988 at Dodger Stadium will forever live in the hearts of baseball fans. Game 1 of the World Series had the Dodgers trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, and they were in search of a miracle. A’s closer, Dennis Eckersley, was on the mound for the 9th inning. Eckersley, who had save 45 games during the regular season, retired Mike Scioscia and Jeff Hamilton for the first two outs of the 9th. The next man up was pinch-hitter Mike Davis, who was able to work a walk. Kirk Gibson, who had signed as a free agent prior to the season and would eventually lead the team in average and home runs, had been sidelined do to injuries. Gibson had watched the majority of the game in the clubhouse but told manager Tommy Lasorda he was available to pinch-hit if needed. Lasorada did not hesitate as he called upon his team leader to provide a miracle. Gibson came to the plate and promptly fell behind 0-2. The at-bat itself was a work of art as Gibson battled Eckersley and was eventually able to work the count to 3-2. Tying run at 2B (Davis had stolen the base), 3-2 count, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th…Eckersley’s next pitch was a backdoor slider that hung over the plate and Gibson did not miss it. Hall of Fame broadcaster, Vin Scully, described it like this: “Sax waiting on deck but the game right now is at the plate. High fly ball into right field, she is…GONE!!!” As Gibson rounded the bases and performed his famous fist-pump, Scully added, “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!” One of the greatest moments in World Series history.
As a side note: There are two red stars in the design just above the sign. As you watch the video replay of the Gibson HR, there's a car in the parking that puts its brake lights on...we assume listening to the radio call of the HR and most likely, in disbelief. We just wanted to make sure we covered the details of the night as we all saw it unfold.
